I am a student.  I believe that social media has a crucial role in the way we view ourselves.  Social media has become this giant and will probably continue to grow for decades upon decades.  As a society, we will have to get used to it being a part of our norm.  It is here to stay.  Social media has made such an impact on our lives in the past few decades and it is the Alexander Bell line of modern times.  It is one of the top forms of communication and probably will surpass cell phone usage if it has not already done so.   Because we are on social media, as a society, so much, it seems almost inevitable that it would play a role in how we view ourselves.  At any point, you can log onto a social site and see that someone is speaking negatively about someone else.  Whether it is about someone’s looks, fashion choice, or life choice, you’ll see something negative about one or all.  As a society, we have conformed to thinking that we should hold these things to truth.  We also have conformed to thinking that we have a right to comment on everything and everyone.  Social media has had a tremendously negative effect on society’s self-esteem.  We have taught ourselves to believe that everything that we see is real and should be happening in our lives.  If we see someone looking a certain way, driving a certain type of vehicle, or traveling abroad on an island somewhere, then feel that we must be doing the same.  Unfortunately, when we are not able to attain those things we are extremely critical of ourselves and we begin to believe that we are less than those who can get and do have those things.  Until, we as an entire society, say enough is enough, this will be the societal norm.  Until we begin to tell ourselves that we matter no matter what the next person says or does, we will continue to allow social media to dictate our self-worth.
