The Status Quo

In today’s world we are facing imminent disasters and fast-moving changes that require us to quickly and effectively respond with major innovations and different approaches to age-old problems.  Climate change requires us to rapidly reconceive the way we power our homes, businesses, and transportation. AI requires a radical shift in our understanding of thought and communication. Yet human beings seem to be creatures of habit; though a single individual may have the ability and inclination to turn on a dime, human beings as a group are addicted to routine and predictability. It worries me that we may see no meaningful progress as we are overtaken by calamities of our own invention.
